Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument for political activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific Jury member. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
